What is QuEST?
STFC has been working with the National Quantum Technologies Programme to drive forward apprentice-focused skills development for the rapidly growing quantum industry. Aligning with the UK Quantum Skills Taskforce Report in which key roles and related skills were identified as areas to strengthen within emerging quantum technologies, STFC developed Quantum Enabling Skills Training (QuEST) South in Oxfordshire which launched in September 2024.
QuEST utilises National Laboratories infrastructure and competence, developing skills for the quantum workforce. The programme delivers practical, hands-on learning and experience, augments existing standard apprenticeship training and supports a thriving quantum business community.
Designed for apprentices
Designed specifically with apprentices in mind, QuEST delivers specialist quantum-related knowledge and skills to complement Level 3 training upwards. It can be taught as a complete programme or as modules depending on the existing skill and knowledge of the learner.
The ambition of QuEST is to target priority roles and skill sets to train a large and varied future workforce with the right skills and expertise to support the rapidly growing quantum industry.
A dynamic engineering syllabus
The dynamic engineering syllabus covers foundational engineering skills before moving on to quantum-relevant areas such as cryogenics, vacuum, high purity and high-pressure gas, magnets and detectors.
